Name meaning: "empty; temple of the head"

Rakkath (meaning empty or shore of the sea) was a fortified city in the territory of Naphtali listed in Joshua 19:35. It was located on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. Many scholars identify it with or near the site of Tiberias, built by Herod Antipas around 20 AD, or with the nearby hot springs of Hammath. The Talmud identifies Rakkath with Tiberias. The city appears only in this single tribal allotment list.
