Ramath-mizpeh

Ramath-mizpeh (meaning height of the watchtower) was a city marking the northern border of the tribe of Gad in Transjordan (Joshua 13:26). It is usually identified with Ramoth-gilead or with a site near Mizpeh of Gilead (Judges 11:29). The place was in the highland of Gilead east of the Jordan, in territory that was perpetually contested between Israel, Aram-Damascus, and Ammon. Its designation as both a height and a watchtower reflects the strategic importance of elevated positions in the Transjordanian hill country.
