Ramoth
Place Name
Name meaning: "eminences; high places"
Ramoth (meaning eminences or high places) was the name of several towns in Israel. The most significant was Ramoth in Gilead (Ramoth-gilead), treated separately. A second Ramoth was a Levitical city in the tribe of Issachar (1 Chronicles 6:73), also called Jarmuth in Joshua 21:29 and Remeth in Joshua 19:21. A third Ramoth in the south appears in 1 Samuel 30:27 (Ramoth of the south / Ramath of the Negeb). The recurrence of the name throughout the tribal territories reflects its basic meaning: any elevated, prominent location could be designated a ramoth.
