Remigius of Auxerre

Remigius of Auxerre (c. 841–908) was a Carolingian monk and teacher who wrote commentaries on Scripture and on the liberal arts. His glosses on the Psalms and Gospels were widely copied and fed the later medieval gloss tradition.

A leading teacher of the late Carolingian schools, Remigius wrote glosses on the Psalms, the Gospels, and the liberal arts that were copied across Europe and absorbed into the Glossa Ordinaria, the standard running commentary that framed the medieval Bible. His careful, school-tested explanations helped form the method of biblical study that the universities would inherit.
