Resen

Place Name

Name meaning: "a bridle or bit"

Resen (meaning a bridle or bit) was one of the cities of the ancient Assyrian empire described in Genesis 10:11–12 as built by Nimrod (or by Asshur) between Nineveh and Calah — that is the great city. The phrase the great city may refer to Resen itself, to the entire complex of cities, or to Nineveh or Calah. The location of Resen has not been positively identified; it may correspond to one of the sites on the Tigris between the ruins of Nineveh (modern Mosul) and Calah (modern Nimrud).
