Rhegium

Rhegium (meaning rupture or fracture, modern Reggio Calabria) was a Greek colonial city at the southern tip of the Italian peninsula, on the Strait of Messina opposite Sicily. It was a significant port and the natural landing point for ships rounding the toe of Italy heading north. Acts 28:13 records that Paul's ship, carrying him as a prisoner to Rome, put in at Rhegium after leaving Melita (Malta), and after waiting a day for a favorable south wind, sailed on to Puteoli — the main port for Rome's grain trade. Rhegium's position made it a major stopping point on the route between the eastern Mediterranean and Rome.
