Rhodes

Rhodes (meaning same as Rhoda, i.e., a rose) was a large Greek island at the southwestern tip of Asia Minor (modern Turkey), famous in antiquity for the Colossus of Rhodes — one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World — and as a center of commerce and culture. Acts 21:1 records that Paul's ship passed by Rhodes on his journey from Miletus to Jerusalem, stopping first at Cos and then at Rhodes before sailing to Patara. Rhodes had a significant Jewish community in the intertestamental period and was on the principal sea route between the Aegean and the eastern Mediterranean.
