Riphath

Person Name

Name meaning: "remedy; medicine; release; pardon"

Riphath (meaning remedy, medicine, release, or pardon) was the second son of Gomer, himself the eldest son of Japheth the son of Noah (Genesis 10:3). He is listed in the table of nations that describes the post-Flood distribution of peoples across the earth. In the parallel list in 1 Chronicles 1:6, he is called Diphath, likely a scribal variant. Josephus identified the Riphatheans with the Paphlagonian people of Asia Minor, though this identification is uncertain. As a figure in the table of nations, Riphath represents one of the clans of the Indo-European peoples who settled north and northwest of the ancient Near East.
