River of Egypt

The River of Egypt (Hebrew nahal mitsrayim or nahal mitsraim) designated the southwestern boundary of the Promised Land as given to Abraham (Genesis 15:18) and as described in the territory allocated to the tribe of Judah and the larger land of Israel (Numbers 34:5; Joshua 15:4, 47). It is most commonly identified with Wadi el-Arish (the "brook of Egypt"), a seasonal streambed that flows northward through the Sinai desert into the Mediterranean near the site of ancient Rhinocolura, approximately forty miles southwest of Gaza. This is distinct from the Nile (Ye'or), though the term is occasionally used for the Nile in other contexts.
