Sadoc

Person Name

Name meaning: "or Zadok, just; righteous"

Sadoc (the Greek form of the Hebrew name Zadok, meaning just or righteous) appears in the genealogy of Jesus Christ in Matthew's Gospel (Matt. 1:14) as a descendant of Zerubbabel and an ancestor of Achim. He belongs to the post-exilic section of the genealogy, which traces the royal line of David from the return from Babylon through the period of the Second Temple down to Joseph, the legal father of Jesus. Nothing else is recorded of Sadoc in Scripture beyond his place in this genealogical list. His inclusion preserves the historical continuity of David's royal line through the generations between the Babylonian exile and the birth of Christ, fulfilling the promise that the Messiah would be of David's lineage (2 Sam. 7:12–13; Matt. 1:1).
