Sallu

Sallu (meaning weighed or paid) is the name of two men in the post-exilic biblical records. The first was a Benjamite, son of Meshullam, who was among the first to resettle in Jerusalem after the return from Babylon (1 Chr. 9:7; Neh. 11:7). The second Sallu was a priest who returned with Zerubbabel and is listed as the head of a priestly family in the days of Joiakim the high priest (Neh. 12:7). The priestly Sallu corresponds to the "Sallai" of Neh. 12:20, the two names being variants of the same individual or family designation. Like many of the names in these post-exilic rosters, Sallu appears solely in genealogical and administrative lists, representing the organized reestablishment of tribal and priestly communities in the land after the Babylonian exile.
