Samgar-nebo

Samgar-nebo appears in Jeremiah 39:3 as one of the Babylonian princes who entered Jerusalem through the middle gate after Nebuchadnezzar breached the city's walls in 586 BC. The text lists several officials by name: Nergal-sharezer, Samgar-nebo, Sarsechim (Rab-saris), Nergal-sharezer (Rab-mag), and others. Modern scholarship has proposed that "Samgar-nebo" may be a title or an epithet rather than a proper name, and that the list as a whole involves scribal difficulties. Some have suggested that Samgar-nebo may be a variant form of a Babylonian court title meaning be gracious, O Nebo or cup-bearer of Nebo, possibly attached to one of the Nergal-sharezer officials in the list. The Babylonian officials' presence at the middle gate symbolized the complete fulfillment of Jeremiah's prophecies of Jerusalem's fall to Nebuchadnezzar (Jer. 21:7; 25:9).
