Scorpions

Scorpions (Hebrew 'aqrab; Greek skorpios) were common venomous arachnids of the hot, rocky wilderness regions of the ancient Near East, well known to every Israelite and particularly associated with the Sinai wilderness. They are mentioned alongside serpents as characteristic dangers of the desert through which God led Israel (Deut. 8:15). The scorpion's painful sting was proverbial for severe pain, making it an apt image for cruel punishment: Rehoboam's boast that his discipline would be with scorpions rather than whips (1 Kings 12:11, 14) was a threat of intensified harshness. Jesus gave his disciples authority to tread on scorpions and serpents without harm (Luke 10:19), symbolizing power over all spiritual enemies. In the apocalyptic vision of Revelation 9:3–10, demonic locusts are given power like that of scorpions — authorized to torment but not to kill, for five months — one of the most vivid images of spiritual judgment in the New Testament.
