Sea, The

Place

In biblical geography, "the sea" (Hebrew yam) most commonly refers to the Mediterranean Sea, called the "Great Sea" (Num. 34:6; Josh. 1:4), which formed the western boundary of the Promised Land. The Red Sea (Hebrew Yam Suph, "Sea of Reeds") is central to the Exodus narrative (Ex. 14–15). Other significant seas include the Sea of Galilee (also called Gennesaret or Tiberias) and the Dead Sea (Salt Sea). In biblical cosmology the sea also represents the primordial watery chaos that God mastered at creation (Gen. 1:2; Ps. 104:6–9), and in apocalyptic literature it symbolizes the domain of hostile powers (Dan. 7:2–3; Rev. 13:1) — a dominion ultimately abolished in the new creation, where "the sea was no more" (Rev. 21:1).
