Seething Pot

The seething (boiling) pot appears as a significant prophetic image in two contexts. In Jeremiah's inaugural visions, the second vision is a "seething pot, and the face thereof is toward the north" (Jer. 1:13), symbolizing the northern enemy — Babylon — whose invasion would pour out destruction upon Judah. In Ezekiel, the prophet employs the allegory of a seething pot at length (Ezek. 24:3–14): Jerusalem is the pot, its people the flesh inside, and the fire the judgment of God that will boil them until even the pot's rust (its bloodguilt) is consumed. The image powerfully conveys divine judgment as an irresistible, all-consuming process.
