Segub

Segub was the youngest son of Hiel of Bethel, the man who rebuilt the city of Jericho during the reign of Ahab (1 Kgs. 16:34). In doing so, Hiel fulfilled the curse Joshua had pronounced at Jericho's destruction: "Cursed before the LORD be the man who rises up and rebuilds this city, Jericho. At the cost of his firstborn shall he lay its foundation, and at the cost of his youngest son shall he set up its gates" (Josh. 6:26). Segub's death at the setting up of Jericho's gates thus confirmed that Joshua's prophetic curse had been in force all along. The name may mean "elevated" or "exalted."
