Sepharvaim

Sepharvaim was a city or district from which Assyrian king Sargon II brought colonists to repopulate Samaria after deporting the northern Israelites (2 Kgs. 17:24; 18:34). The colonists from Sepharvaim brought their own gods: Adrammelech and Anammelech, to whom they burned their children in fire (2 Kgs. 17:31). Sennacherib's emissary Rabshakeh cited Sepharvaim's defeat as evidence that the LORD could not deliver Jerusalem (2 Kgs. 18:34; 19:13). The city is commonly identified with the twin cities of Sippar-Aruru and Sippar-Amnanu on the Euphrates in Babylonia, though some scholars suggest a Syrian location.
