Sethur

Person Name

Name meaning: "hid; concealed"

Sethur was the son of Michael and the representative spy from the tribe of Asher sent by Moses to survey the land of Canaan (Num. 13:13). He is one of the twelve tribal leaders — one from each tribe — commissioned to reconnoiter the promised land before Israel's attempted entry. His name is often interpreted as meaning "hidden" or "concealed." Sethur is one of the ten spies whose report discouraged Israel and contributed to the forty-year wilderness wandering; only Caleb and Joshua dissented. Beyond this episode, Sethur plays no further role in the biblical narrative.
