Seven

Seven (Hebrew sheva; Greek hepta) is the most prominent symbolic number in Scripture, associated with completion, wholeness, and the sacred order of creation. Its primacy derives from the seven-day creation week culminating in God's Sabbath rest (Gen. 2:2–3), making it the structuring number of sacred time: the seventh day is holy (Ex. 20:10), the seventh year is sabbatical (Lev. 25:4), and the 49th year (7×7) introduces the Jubilee (Lev. 25:8–10). The number pervades liturgical and ritual contexts (seven sprinklings of blood, seven-day feasts, seven-branched menorah). In Revelation it becomes the organizing number of the apocalyptic vision: seven churches, seven seals, seven trumpets, seven bowls, and seven spirits of God (Rev. 1:4; 5:1; 8:2; 15:7). Jesus taught that forgiveness must extend to seventy times seven (Matt. 18:22).
