Shallecheth, Gate of

The Gate of Shallecheth (meaning "casting out" or "felling of trees") was a gate on the western side of the complex of Solomon's temple and palace in Jerusalem, with the ascending causeway or road leading up to it (1 Chr. 26:16). It was one of the gates assigned to the Levitical gatekeepers, with Shuppim and Hosah appointed to guard it. The name may refer to the disposal of refuse or hewn wood from the temple. It is mentioned only in the context of David's organization of the Levitical gatekeeping divisions and is not attested in the archaeological record.
