Shamir

Shamir appears in two distinct OT contexts as a place name. (1) Shamir in the hill country of Judah was one of the cities listed in Joshua 15:48 in the fifth district of the tribe of Judah. (2) Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim was the home and burial place of the judge Tola son of Puah, who judged Israel twenty-three years (Judg. 10:1–2). The name means "a thorn" or "a sharp point." A third bearer of the name is Shamir the son of Micah, a Levite in the temple service under David (1 Chr. 24:24), though this refers to a person, not a place.
