Shammah

Shammah was the name of several biblical figures. (1) Shammah son of Reuel and grandson of Esau was a chief (alluph) of Edom (Gen. 36:13, 17; 1 Chr. 1:37). (2) Shammah the third son of Jesse, David's father, served in Saul's army when David came to the camp before fighting Goliath (1 Sam. 16:9; 17:13). (3) Most notably, Shammah son of Agee the Hararite was one of David's three greatest mighty men, renowned for a single act of heroic faithfulness: when the Philistines gathered at a plot of lentils and the rest of Israel fled, "he took his stand in the midst of the plot and defended it and struck down the Philistines, and the LORD worked a great victory" (2 Sam. 23:11–12). The name means "astonishment" or "desolation."
