Shammua

Shammua (meaning "one who is heard" or "renowned") was the name of several OT individuals. (1) Shammua son of Zaccur from the tribe of Reuben was one of the twelve spies sent by Moses to survey Canaan (Num. 13:4). (2) Shammua (or Shimea) was a son of David born in Jerusalem to Bathsheba (2 Sam. 5:14; 1 Chr. 14:4). (3) A priest named Shammua son of Galal served in Jerusalem in the time of Nehemiah (Neh. 11:17; 12:18). (4) A Levite named Shammua — possibly the same as the preceding — assisted in reading the law under Ezra (Neh. 8:4, where the name appears as "Shema" in some manuscripts).
