Shaphat (meaning "judge" or "Yahweh has judged") was the name of several OT figures. (1) Shaphat son of Hori from the tribe of Simeon was one of the twelve spies sent by Moses to survey Canaan (Num. 13:5). (2) Shaphat of Abel-meholah was the father of the prophet Elisha (1 Kgs. 19:16, 19; 2 Kgs. 3:11; 6:31). Elisha was plowing with oxen when Elijah threw his mantle upon him, and is frequently identified in Kings as "Elisha son of Shaphat." (3) Shaphat son of Shemaiah was a descendant of King David in the royal genealogy (1 Chr. 3:22). (4) Shaphat son of Adlai was the official in charge of David's herds in the valleys (1 Chr. 27:29).
