Shebaniah

Shebaniah (meaning: whom Jehovah hides or whom Jehovah has caused to grow up) is the name of several individuals in the post-exilic period. One Shebaniah was a priest appointed by David to blow a trumpet before the ark of the Lord when it was brought to Jerusalem (1 Chronicles 15:24). Several others appear in the Nehemiah narrative: a Levite who led the congregation in the great prayer of confession on the twenty-fourth day of the seventh month (Nehemiah 9:4–5), a priest who sealed the covenant renewal (Nehemiah 10:4), and two Levites also among the signatories of the covenant (Nehemiah 10:10, 12).

The frequency of the name in the restoration community reflects the Levitical and priestly families' strong presence in the return from Babylon and their central role in the religious renewal under Ezra and Nehemiah. The various Shebaniahss demonstrate how the same priestly and Levitical names recurred across generations within these families.
