Shebna

Shebna (meaning: tender youth or possibly of foreign origin) was a high royal official during the reign of King Hezekiah of Judah, initially holding the position of steward or treasurer over the house — the highest domestic office of the royal court (Isaiah 22:15). The prophet Isaiah pronounced a severe oracle against him for his pride, specifically for hewing himself a grand tomb in the rock as though he were a great man, and predicted that he would be hurled violently away and die in a foreign land (Isaiah 22:16–19).

Shebna subsequently appears at a lower rank — as secretary rather than steward — when Hezekiah sends him with Eliakim and Joah to negotiate with the Assyrian Rabshakeh during the siege of Jerusalem (2 Kings 18:18, 26, 37; Isaiah 36:3, 11, 22), suggesting that Isaiah's rebuke resulted in his demotion. The position of steward over the house that Isaiah says will be given to Eliakim was fulfilled (Isaiah 22:20–24), making Shebna's trajectory a vivid illustration of pride brought low and faithful service exalted.
