Shecaniah

Shecaniah (meaning: one intimate with Jehovah or Jehovah is my neighbor) is the name of several individuals in the post-exilic period. A priest of the tenth division of priests organized by David is named Shecaniah in 1 Chronicles 24:11. Another prominent in 2 Chronicles 31:15 distributed the freewill offerings among the priests during Hezekiah's reform. A descendant of Zerubbabel appears in the Davidic genealogy of 1 Chronicles 3:21–22.

The most historically significant Shecaniah was the son of Jehiel of the sons of Elam, who made the remarkable proposal to Ezra that the community confess and address the crisis of foreign marriages (Ezra 10:2–4). Though he himself may not have been among the offenders, Shecaniah urged Ezra to act decisively, pledging community support for covenant renewal. Another Shecaniah, the father of Shemaiah who repaired a section of Jerusalem's wall (Nehemiah 3:29), and one who returned from Babylon with Ezra (Ezra 8:3, 5) also bear the name.
