Shemeber

Shemeber (meaning: soaring on high or lofty flight) was the king of Zeboiim, one of the five cities of the plain of the Jordan valley (the Pentapolis), who joined the coalition against Chedorlaomer in the rebellion of Genesis 14:2. After twelve years of subjection to Chedorlaomer king of Elam and his allied kings from the east, the five kings — including Shemeber of Zeboiim — rose in revolt in the thirteenth year and engaged the eastern coalition in the valley of Siddim.

The battle went badly for the five kings of the plain: they were defeated, and the city of Sodom was plundered along with its inhabitants, including Lot. This defeat prompted Abraham's military rescue of Lot with his trained household servants, which in turn led to the famous meeting with Melchizedek at the valley of Shaveh. Shemeber and his fellow kings represent the pre-destruction political structure of the region that was obliterated in the divine judgment of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19).
