Shemiramoth

Shemiramoth (meaning: most high name or height of the heavens) is the name of two Levites in the period of David. The first was a Levite of the second rank appointed to play on psalteries (harps of lower pitch) when the ark was brought from the house of Obed-edom to Jerusalem (1 Chronicles 15:18, 20). He continued in Levitical service before the ark in Jerusalem after its installation (1 Chronicles 16:5).

The second Shemiramoth was one of the Levites sent by King Jehoshaphat throughout the cities of Judah in the third year of his reign as part of a teaching mission — bringing the Book of the Law to instruct the people alongside the priests and other Levites (2 Chronicles 17:8). This itinerant teaching initiative represented Jehoshaphat's effort to ground his kingdom's reform in the knowledge of God's law among the common people. Both Shemiramoths represent the Levitical class's dual function in Israel: musical worship in the sanctuary and teaching of the Torah in the community.
