Sherezer

Sherezer was one of two men sent by the men of Bethel to the house of God to inquire of the priests and prophets whether the fasts observed in the fifth and seventh months should continue to be kept during the second year of Darius (Zechariah 7:2). The delegation, coming from the community that had returned to the land, raised a question about the relevance of the mourning fasts commemorating the destruction of the temple and Jerusalem, now that the rebuilding was underway.

The Lord's response through Zechariah (chapters 7–8) reoriented the question away from ritual observance toward the ethical demands of justice, mercy, and compassion that the fasts were meant to cultivate. The name Sherezer is of Assyrian or Babylonian origin, reflecting the cultural milieu of the returnees who had grown up in the exile. No further information about Sherezer is given beyond this single narrative mention.
