Sheva

Sheva is the name of two individuals in Scripture. The first was a son of Caleb (the son of Hezron, not the spy) by his concubine Maachah, and the father of Machbenah and Gibea (1 Chronicles 2:49). This Sheva belongs to the Calebite branch of Judah and appears in the genealogy tracing the clans that settled the region around Hebron and Ziph.

The second and more prominent Sheva was David's royal secretary, the chief administrative scribe responsible for the king's official correspondence. He appears in 2 Samuel 20:25 under this name, but the same officer is called Seraiah in 2 Samuel 8:17, Shisha in 1 Kings 4:3, and Shavsha in 1 Chronicles 18:16. The variation in spelling across the different biblical lists reflects scribal variation in transliterating an originally foreign name — possibly Egyptian — into Hebrew. His sons Elihoreph and Ahiah continued as royal secretaries under Solomon, making the position hereditary in his family.
