Shihon

Shihon (meaning: overturning or ruin) was a town in the tribal territory of Issachar, listed among the cities assigned to that tribe in the boundary and settlement list of Joshua 19:19. It appears in a cluster of Issacharite towns in the eastern Jezreel valley and lower Galilee region, though its precise location is not established with certainty.

Shihon is mentioned only in this single settlement list and plays no role in any narrative events in the Old Testament. Like many of the minor settlement names in the Joshua boundary lists, it preserves the memory of populated sites in the Iron Age Israelite landscape that were part of the tribal administrative geography even though no significant events were associated with them. The region of Issachar was one of the fertile tribal territories in the northern kingdom, dominated by the agricultural plains of the Jezreel valley and the approaches to Galilee.
