Shimeon

Shimeon (meaning: hearkening or hearing) was an Israelite of the family of Harim who had taken a foreign wife and was listed among those who agreed to put her away in response to Ezra's covenant reform (Ezra 10:31). He is mentioned in the single verse of Ezra 10:31 among a group of laymen who similarly responded to Ezra's call for covenant faithfulness.

Beyond this single appearance, nothing further is known about Shimeon. He represents one of the many ordinary members of the post-exilic community whose personal response to the crisis of intermarriage and covenant compromise is preserved in the list of Ezra 10. The name Shimeon is a variant of Simeon, the tribal ancestor of Israel, and its use in this context reflects the continuity of traditional Hebrew names in the restored community that had returned from Babylon.
