Shimron

Shimron (meaning: watch-post or watch-height) was an ancient Canaanite royal city whose king joined the northern coalition under Jabin king of Hazor against Joshua and the Israelites. The coalition was defeated at the waters of Merom (Joshua 11:1–9), and the king of Shimron is listed among the thirty-one kings whom Joshua defeated (Joshua 12:20). The city was subsequently assigned to the tribe of Zebulun (Joshua 19:15).

Shimron's location is generally identified with Tell Shimron or Khirbet Sammuniyeh in the western Jezreel valley, near the foot of the Carmel range, a strategically positioned site overlooking important routes through the valley. The city's role in the northern coalition against Joshua reflects the organized political structure of Canaanite city-states during the Late Bronze Age. After the conquest, Shimron became part of Zebulun's territorial inheritance in the western approaches to the Jezreel valley.
