Shobal
Person Name
Name meaning: "path; ear of corn"
Shobal is a name borne by three biblical figures. (1.) A son of Seir the Horite and chief of one of the Horite clans of Edom (Genesis 36:20, 23; 1 Chronicles 1:38, 40). He was ancestor of several sub-clans of the Edomites. (2.) A son of Caleb son of Hur, the founder or chief of Kiriath-jearim (1 Chronicles 2:50, 52), one of the towns assigned to the tribe of Judah. His descendants included various sub-clans who settled in the region. (3.) A son of Judah by an unnamed mother (1 Chronicles 4:1–2), listed in the expanded genealogy of Judah. The repetition of this name across different genealogical threads may reflect the blending of Hurrite and Judahite tribal memories in the Chronicler's record.
