Shocho

Place

Shocho (also spelled Shochoh, Sochoh, Socoh, or Shoco) was a town in the lowland territory of Judah (the Shephelah). It appears in Joshua 15:35 in the list of cities of Judah in the valley, and is important as the site near which the Philistines encamped before the battle of Elah, when David killed Goliath: the Philistines gathered their armies at Socoh, which belongs to Judah (1 Samuel 17:1). The valley of Elah lay between Socoh and Azekah, and the two armies faced each other across it for forty days before the decisive confrontation. Later, Rehoboam fortified the city as part of his chain of defenses for Judah (2 Chronicles 11:7).
