Sichem

Place Name

Name meaning: "portion; shoulder"

Sichem is a variant form of Shechem, the important city in the central highlands of Canaan between Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim. The name Sichem occurs in Genesis 12:6 in the account of Abram's first arrival in Canaan: Abram passed through the land to the place of Sichem, as far as the terebinth of Moreh. It is also used in Genesis 33:18 and Acts 7:16. Shechem was the site of the covenant renewal ceremony under Joshua (Joshua 24), the short-lived kingship of Abimelech (Judges 9), and later the capital of the northern kingdom under Jeroboam I (1 Kings 12:25).
