Sirah

Sirah is the name of a well or cistern mentioned in 2 Samuel 3:26 in connection with the treacherous killing of Abner. After Abner had made peace with David and departed in safety, Joab (who bore a blood feud against Abner for killing his brother Asahel) secretly sent messengers after Abner and brought him back from the well of Sirah without David's knowledge. When Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside at the gate and killed him — an act David publicly disavowed with lamentation and a formal mourning ceremony. The well of Sirah is usually identified with the modern spring Ain Sarah, about a mile north of Hebron.
