Sodoma

Place

Sodoma is the Greek transliteration of the Hebrew place name Sodom, appearing in Paul's quotation of Isaiah 1:9 in Romans 9:29: "Except the LORD of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha." The Revised Version restores the familiar English form "Sodom" at this point. Paul uses the reference to underscore that Israel's survival as a people is entirely a matter of divine grace — without God's preserving mercy, the nation would have been as utterly destroyed as Sodom and Gomorrah.

The use of the Greek form Sodoma here reflects Paul's quotation from the Septuagint rather than from the Hebrew text, a common practice in his epistles and in the broader New Testament.
