Spain

Spain (Latin: Hispania) is mentioned in Paul's Letter to the Romans as a destination he planned to visit after delivering the collection to Jerusalem, hoping to stop in Rome on the way (Rom. 15:24, 28). The Iberian Peninsula was the western extremity of the Roman Empire and a region of significant Jewish settlement in the first century. Paul's ambition to preach the gospel "where Christ was not named" (Rom. 15:20) drove this westward vision beyond Rome itself.

Whether Paul ever reached Spain is uncertain: the Pastoral Epistles suggest a period of ministry after his first Roman imprisonment, and Clement of Rome (c. A.D. 96) writes that Paul reached "the extreme limit of the west" — a phrase many interpret as Spain. No clear documentary evidence confirms a Spanish mission, but the ambition expressed in Romans 15 fits the pattern of Paul's missionary strategy of advancing the gospel along the major Roman roads to the farthest reaches of the empire.
