Sukkiims

Person

The Sukkiims (also Sukkites; LXX and Vulgate: Troglodytes, meaning "cave-dwellers") were one of the African peoples who composed part of the army of Shishak (Sheshonq I) of Egypt when he invaded Judah in the fifth year of Rehoboam's reign (2 Chr. 12:3). They are mentioned alongside Lubim (Libyans) and Ethiopians as the ethnic components of Shishak's vast force of 1,200 chariots and 60,000 horsemen.

The Sukkiims are generally identified with nomadic or semi-nomadic people of the African interior or the region along the Red Sea, possibly inhabiting the caves of the hills south of Egypt (hence the Greek rendering "troglodytes"). Their single appearance in Scripture provides evidence of the diverse ethnic recruitment of the Libyan pharaohs of Egypt's Twenty-second Dynasty, who drew military manpower from across North Africa.
