Tabitha

Tabitha (Aramaic, equivalent to Greek Dorcas, both meaning "gazelle") was a Christian disciple at Joppa renowned for her good works and charity — especially making garments for the widows of the congregation (Acts 9:36). When she died, the disciples sent for Peter, who came to Joppa, cleared the room of mourners, knelt in prayer, and commanded: "Tabitha, arise." She opened her eyes and sat up, and Peter presented her alive (Acts 9:40–41). This miracle — the first apostolic resurrection in the NT narrative — became known throughout Joppa and led many to believe in the Lord (Acts 9:42). Tabitha's combination of faith and practical service to the poor makes her a model of Christian discipleship.
