Tablet

In biblical usage, a tablet is a flat writing surface — of stone, clay, or wax-covered wood — used for inscribing laws, records, or prophetic messages. Isaiah is commanded to write a prophecy on a large tablet as a public witness (Isa. 30:8), and Habakkuk is told to write his vision plainly on tablets "so that a runner may read it" (Hab. 2:2). In the NT, Zechariah writes "His name is John" on a writing tablet (pinakidion, a small wax-coated board) when unable to speak, resolving the dispute over his son's name (Luke 1:63). The Hebrew word luch (tablet) is also used for the stone tablets of the law (Ex. 34:1) and the cedar planks of temple paneling (1 Kgs. 7:36).
