Tabor

Mount Tabor is an isolated, dome-shaped mountain rising approximately 1,843 feet above the surrounding plain of Jezreel in lower Galilee. It served as the mustering point for Barak's forces at Deborah's direction before the defeat of Sisera (Judg. 4:6, 12–14). The psalmist joins "Tabor and Hermon" as rejoicing in God's name (Ps. 89:12), and Jeremiah employs it as a metaphor for the certainty of coming judgment: "Surely as Tabor is among the mountains... so shall he come" (Jer. 46:18). The border of Zebulun reached Tabor (Josh. 19:22), and a Levitical city Chisloth-tabor was nearby (1 Chr. 6:77). Christian tradition from at least the 4th century has identified Tabor as the site of the Transfiguration, though the Synoptic Gospels specify only "a high mountain" (Matt. 17:1; Mark 9:2).
