Tanis

Tanis (Egyptian Djanet; Hebrew Zoan) was a major Egyptian city in the northeastern Nile Delta, capital of Egypt during the 21st and 22nd Dynasties (c. 1070–716 B.C.). In Scripture it appears as Zoan, the site of Moses' miraculous signs: "He wrought his signs in Egypt and his wonders in the field of Zoan" (Ps. 78:12, 43). Isaiah includes "the princes of Zoan" among the foolish counselors whose wisdom has failed Pharaoh (Isa. 19:11, 13; 30:4). Numbers 13:22 notes that Zoan/Tanis was built seven years after Hebron, placing it among the oldest inhabited cities. The modern site of San el-Hagar in the Egyptian Delta preserves the ruins of ancient Tanis.
