Teman
Name meaning: "on the right hand; the south"
Teman (meaning "south" or "right hand") was a district and clan of Edom, descended from Teman the grandson of Esau (Gen. 36:11, 15; 1 Chr. 1:36). It gave its name to the southern region of Edom and became used synonymously with Edom itself in prophetic literature. Teman was proverbially famous for its wisdom (Jer. 49:7; Bar. 3:22–23). Prophetic judgment fell specifically on Teman: Amos (1:12) pronounces fire on it, Obadiah (9) declares its warriors dismayed, Jeremiah (49:20) announces its destruction, and Habakkuk (3:3) recalls God coming "from Teman" in the theophanic march of judgment. Job's friend Eliphaz is identified as "the Temanite" (Job 2:11), associated with this region's wisdom tradition.
