Tertius

Tertius was the trained secretary (amanuensis) who physically wrote the letter to the Romans as Paul dictated it. He inserts his own personal greeting into the letter: "I Tertius, who wrote this letter, greet you in the Lord" (Rom. 16:22). The use of a professional scribe for important correspondence was standard practice in the ancient Mediterranean world; Paul also employed secretaries for other letters (1 Cor. 16:21; Gal. 6:11; Col. 4:18; 2 Thess. 3:17; Philem. 19). Tertius is the only amanuensis who identifies himself by name within a Pauline letter, suggesting he was personally known to the Roman congregation, which may indicate he was from Rome or had connections there.
