Theophylact

Theophylact of Ohrid (c. 1055–1107), a Byzantine scholar and archbishop, wrote lucid commentaries on the Gospels and Epistles that distil Chrysostom and the earlier Greek Fathers into clear, usable form. Widely read in both East and West, his work was a favourite source for later compilers, including the Catena Aurea.

Theophylact's gift was clarity: his commentaries on the Gospels and Epistles distil Chrysostom and the earlier Greek Fathers into concise, readable exposition, making him one of the most useful of all guides to the plain sense of the New Testament. Widely copied in both East and West and later printed and translated, his work remained a favourite of preachers and was drawn on by Reformation commentators.
