Throne

The throne (Hebrew kiss'e) was the royal seat symbolizing sovereign authority and the exercise of judgment. The throne of David became the central theological symbol of God's covenant with Israel regarding a perpetual dynastic line: "I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever" (2 Sam. 7:13; Ps. 45:6). The ark of the covenant was understood as God's earthly throne between the cherubim.

In prophetic and apocalyptic literature, the throne of God dominates heavenly visions — Isaiah sees the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne (Isa. 6:1), and John's Revelation opens with a sustained vision of the divine throne surrounded by the four living creatures and twenty-four elders (Rev. 4:2-11). The New Testament announces that Jesus, risen and ascended, has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God (Heb. 12:2; Rev. 3:21), fulfilling the Davidic covenant in a cosmic register.
