Timnath-heres
Name meaning: "image of the sun"
Timnath-heres, meaning portion of the sun, was the city in the hill country of Ephraim where Joshua was buried (Judg. 2:9). It is identified with Timnath-serah (Josh. 19:50; 24:30), the city Joshua received as his inheritance after the distribution of the land. The site is generally identified with Khirbet Tibnah in the central highlands, approximately seventeen miles southwest of Shechem.
The slight name variation — Timnath-serah ("remaining portion") versus Timnath-heres ("portion of the sun") — may reflect different scribal traditions or a later renaming. The location of Joshua's tomb made the site a significant memorial to Israel's greatest military leader after Moses. Josephus describes Joshua's tomb there as still visible in his day.
